Job Title : Custodian

Department: Facilities (Parks & Planning)

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt IMRF Pension Eligible

Compensation : $19.00 per hour

Schedule: Monday - Friday 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM or Tuesday - Saturday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM

 

Position Summary :

The Custodian will work under the direction and supervision of the Custodial Supervisor. The Custodian is responsible for performing a variety of custodial maintenance duties in the upkeep of all park district buildings.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment, fixtures, surfaces throughout the facility including restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, common areas/rooms, gymnasium, and offices.
  • Maintain inventory of all custodial supplies and report needs to supervisor.
  • Performs routine cleaning of buildings as assigned.
  • Removes all refuse and trash from indoor and outdoor facilities as necessary.
  • Assists with annual maintenance of buildings, including but limited to painting, carpet cleaning, floor, and pool care.
  • Ability to perform light building repairs with the direction of supervisor as needed.
  • Assist with the completion of facility cleaning and maintenance checklist, utilizing custodial software program
  • Performs snow removal from walks and drives as necessary.
  • Interprets and adheres to all policies and procedures outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual, Personnel Policy Manual, and Safety Manual.
  • Attends all required safety program and in-service training meetings (ability to change schedule to attend trainings/meetings).
  • Performs setup/break downs at various locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years demonstrated experience in general maintenance.
  • Must have valid Driver's License subjected to Driver's Abstract, with ability to drive company vehicle.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cleaning equipment, vacuums, floor scrubbers.

 

Competencies:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal control.
  • Knowledge to assist with specification preparation and bidding procedures.
  • Knowledge and skill in all aspects of custodial maintenance.
  • Ability to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and understand materials, such as complex service manuals, diagrams and maintenance and operators' manuals printed in English.
  • Ability to make decisions based on customer service and fiscal constraint.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and problems associated with facility/custodial maintenance and repair.
  • Responsible for keeping organized records and reports.
  • Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the time required to complete repairs in custodial maintenance and equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, while promoting the Park District 's mission statement, vision and core values.
  • Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.
  • Ability to recognize priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to receive constructive criticism and/or supervision.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations.

 

Environmental & Physical Demands:

  • Employee will be required to work both inside and outside during various environmental conditions, such as, but not limited to rain and mud, extremely hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, fumes, dirt, noise, insect bites, and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Frequent operation and handling of assigned equipment, which may include hand tools, ladders, power tools, cleaning equipment, floor scrubbers, and vacuums.
  • Employee must have the p hysical agility to maintain mobility from site to site,and be able to perform heavy manual tasks (a thorough pre-employment physical examination will be required after conditional job offer).
  • Employee may performed duties which include, but not limited to prolonged lifting, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing for extended periods of time.
